Paracutin is the name of the worlds youngest volcano. It came out of a farmer's field in 1943 and is one of the seven natural wonders of the world. There is a church sticking out of the lava from a buried village, and you will find this volcano a mere six hour drive from the city.

Mexico City is built on a lake, the massive marble "Palacio de Bellas Artes" is sinking at a rate of 2.5 inches per year and in many parts of the historic centre you can see evidence of sinkage. Lines in the brickwork which should be straight undulate, and if you look at the cathedral from the far side of the Zocalo.. it is wonky!

The whole of California, New Mexico and Texas (as well as some other US land) used to be part of Mexico until the war in 1847. The current area of Mexico is 45% of what it once was.

The heads of four important men who fought for independence (including Hidalgo) were hung on the corners of a building in Guanajuato for ten years because the Spanish were so annoyed with them.

The reason the indigenous Lacandon indians in the Chiapas jungle don't live in huts with thatched roofs any more is because they now have fireworks. Mexicans love to set off fireworks at any time of the day or night around festival time, and the Lacandons kept burning their houses down!

"El Negro" was the nickname of the most corrupt police official in Mexican history. He was already charged with being a narcotics trafficker in the US when he was appointed chief of police in Mexico City in 1976. His $2.5 million mansion complete with racetrack and disco were later opened to the public as a Museum of Corruption.
